WGPR TV Michigan Historical Marker
Historical markers tell a story, they commemorate a place, an event or a person. In the case of WGPR 3146 East Jefferson was the place where an historic event took place on September 29, 1975. On that day the first black owned and operated television in the United States went on air.

On MLK Day 2016 a Michigan Historical Maker was unveiled at 3146 East Jefferson in recognition of the station’s historic legacy and innovation in broadcast television. The station remained on the air until 1994/5 when it was sold to CBS. The station was the site of WGPR 107.5 FM, which went on the air in September 1961 and was the first FM radio station owned and operated by African Americans in Michigan.
